"The so-called jelamprang style of batik grew from a desire to imitate the treasured double-ikat patolas from India using the batik technique. It required the use of a square-spouted waxing pen to imitate the movement of weft and wrap in weaving. Much of this work was done in Arab businesses in Pekalongan, such as the workshop of Haji May who included L. Metzelaar and Eliza va Zuylen in his list of clients. From humble beginnings as a border filler in the mid-1800s, square-dotted patterning came to cover entire cloths at the turn of the century, then disappeared from sight until rebirth in the 1950s.
